Synopsis:

The dead body of Judge Harold Walker is discovered. He was the president of the Black Rook Chess Club, a club of which Lamont Cranston is a member, As The Shadow, Lamont races against time to solve the murder before Mr. Raymond Packer, the editor of the city newspaper, cracks the case and prints the news, creating a scandal. When John Lord, an employee of the Chess Club, is also murdered, the series of murders become a game. Packer finds an important clue to the mystery but is promptly murdered before he can reveal his findings. Lamont discovers that Dr. Latham placed a bet with Roger Dowd that he could get away with murder. Following the pattern of Judge Walker’s mystery novel, the judge ironically became the first victim. To cover up his crime, Latham sets fire to the entire building. Lamont and Margot escape the inferno and Latham, upon hearing that the police surround the building, jumps out the window to his death.
