Synopsis:

When a young lady named Hilda Keyes claims the charred body of her employer from an auto wreck is not who the police claim, Lamont suspects a racket. The Deacon operates the Port of Peace burial service which cleverly hides his clients while finding suitable substitutes as stiffs. As a former dentist, The Deacon also arranges for the proper fillings which fool anyone using dental records to identify the bodies. After identification at the city morgue, The Deacon properly disposes of each body and cashes in on the insurance, while his client disappears with their cut in order to start all over someplace else. When they discover her suspicions have brought Lamont onto his trail, Hilda is kidnapped by Ace and Gabby, The Deacon’s strong-arms. To further cover their tracks, they plan to eliminate her employer by murdering him and using a blowtorch to simulate the burns so if the police investigate, there will be no evidence of foul play. The Shadow uses a corpse from the back room as a shield against the bullets, knocks out the thugs and then arms Hilda with a gun so she can hold off The Deacon long enough for the arriving police to handle the situation.
