Synopsis:
On board a cruise line, Lamont and Margot stumble upon a bizarre smuggling scheme. During the past few months an alarming series of strange accidents aboard incoming ships has caused fifty crewmembers to be hospitalized with infections in their arms, legs and shoulders and to have to undergo life-saving amputations. Lamont investigates and discovers that Dr. Vadelaw is responsible for Seaman Payne’s arm swelling to twice its normal size. When the doctor is confronted with the fact that his papers are forgeries, Lamont, Margot and the captain are forced out of the room at gunpoint by the doctor. Alone in the room with the patient, the doctor encounters The Shadow. One of the bullets wounds The Shadow but when the seamen attempt to knock down the door, Vadelaw uses his remaining bullet to commit suicide. Later, Lamont explains to Margot that the infections were caused when Vadelaw put his patients to sleep and inserted blood red rubies into them to smuggle the jewels past customs officials.
