Synopsis:
While touring the caverns of Endless Cave, Lamont and Margot learn that their guide, Joe Turner, is one of three men who recently disappeared and there are stories of cavemen still living deep inside the unexplored caverns. Exploring the unexplored using chalk marks to guide them back, the sleuths soon find themselves lost among the tunnels with a laughing madman who changes the marks Margot left on the walls. The madman spends hours on and off preying on their emotions, suggesting they will become victims of the quicksand, bottomless crevices and treacherous whirlpools. Lamont eventually reveals the identity of the madman to be Professor Williams of the local university. Williams discovered nuggets of gold and was eliminating those who stumbled upon them, making them into limestone mummies in the ancient style of the Neanderthal cave man. The Shadow prevents the desperate professor from driving a pick ax into Margot’s head. When fleeing through tunnels, the professor accidentally falls into a bottomless pit. Following the stream of water, Margot and Lamont make their way out of the caves.
