Synopsis:
While touring the caverns of Endless Cave, Lamont and Margot learn that their guide Frank Dolan is one of three men who recently disappeared, and the stories of cavemen still living deep inside the unexplored caverns are a possible cause. Exploring the unexplored, the sleuths soon find themselves lost among the tunnels when a madman changes the chalk marks Margot left on the walls to guide them back. Laughing, he spends hours torturing the sleuths, preying on their emotions, suggesting they will never find an exit and will soon become victims of the quicksand, bottomless crevices and treacherous whirlpools. Eventually, Lamont reveals the madman to be Professor Carlton Graham of the local university. Graham discovered nuggets of gold and was eliminating those who threatened his discovery, making them into limestone mummies in the ancient style of the Neanderthal cave man. The Shadow prevents the professor from driving a pick ax into Margot’s head. Fleeing the scene, the professor accidentally falls into a bottomless pit. Following the stream, Margot and Lamont make their way out of the caves into bright sunlight.

This episode was a rewrite of “The Riddle of the Endless Cave” broadcast on October 18th 1942.
