Synopsis:

Adrift at sea because of a storm, Lamont and Margot are rescued by the crew of a cargo vessel. Even after discovering nameless lifeboats and life preservers, a smashed wireless and an old sailor hanged, the captain still assures them nothing is wrong — no corpse can be found, the lifeboats have names (albeit freshly painted) and the wireless is still in full operation. The Shadow begins questioning the crewmembers, learning that the real captain is being kept blindfolded and chained in a dark room. Natives of various West Indies islands have paid for the privilege of being smuggled into the United States. The first mate replaced the real captain, and with a new crew on board, they intend to create an “accident” which will drown their human cargo and still allow them to profit from the incomplete smuggling. Lamont is knocked unconscious and thrown overboard, but before Margot is forced to join him, The Shadow makes an appearance and steals their guns, holding the criminals at bay until the Coast Guard arrives.
