Synopsis:

In a little fishing village, the Reverend Colby and ten of his parishioners were killed by a mysterious explosion in his church. Authorities have been unable to uncover a possible motive — their investigation hampered by the refusal of the townsfolk to cooperate. Lamont discovers that the wealthy Mrs. Ackley recently returned from the Far East with a man who calls himself “The Prophet,” the leader of a religious cult worshiping a deity known as “The Ancient One.” This cult was stamped out nearly five centuries ago because its ceremonies and rituals included human sacrifice. After discovering that “The Prophet” releases his leopards in the evening to strike fear and superstition among the villagers and that Colby’s daughter, Isabelle, was kidnapped, The Shadow attempts to smash the cult. Margot is also kidnapped when “The Prophet” discovers her association with The Shadow. At Mrs. Ackley’s house, Margot learns from Isabelle that the Hindu uses drugs and hypnotism to control the wealthy woman, changing her private chapel into the “Temple of the Ancient One.” Isabelle is prepared for sacrifice as the “Bride of Death.” The Shadow attends the heathen ceremony while Margot disguises herself among the robed followers. Mrs. Ackley is about to stab the girl with a sword on the sacrificial altar when The Shadow commands her to fight the will of “The Prophet.” Believing The Shadow is stronger than their prophet, the followers overtake the Hindu while the urn filled with burning oil spills on the floor. Isabelle’s bonds are cut free, and Margot helps Mrs. Ackley out of the burning house while the villagers arrive to watch everything — including “The Prophet” — go up in flames.
