Synopsis:

A mysterious black fog envelopes the entire city plunging everything into total darkness. After 72 hours of panic and terror, the mayor receives an extortion note demanding five million dollars for dispelling the fog. A sensational new smoke screen device, invented by the famed scientist, Dr. Heath, and designed to protect entire cities from air raids, has been stolen. Heath is sent to Commissioner Weston’s office to get the extortion money for the leader of the gang but reveals a fate worse than the black fog: deadly gas which will be released into the fog if the money is not paid on time. The Shadow convinces the law to pay Heath the ransom, and then tails the scientist to a boat offshore where he discovers Zaroff, leader of the extortionists, is holding Heath’s young son hostage in return for the doctor’s cooperation. Discovering The Shadow is on board, Zaroff locks himself in a steel cabinet with the money intending to release the deadly poison. With help from Heath and his son, The Shadow sets a fire under the compressed gas tanks causing the entire ship to explode. After nearly killing himself while saving the city, Lamont awakens with Margot, who found him unconscious on the wharf along with Dr. Heath and his son. They watch as the fog begins to lift leaving the sun shining bright.
