Cast: Bill Johnstone (Lamont Cranston/The Shadow) Marjorie Anderson (Margot Lane)
Synopsis:
The death of Robert Ross, owner of “The Morning Star,” strangely parallels the murder mystery serial running in that local newspaper. Suspecting that the wealthy old man’s death was more than an accident, Lamont visits the apartment of Paul Socretes, the serial’s author, only to find him dead, also. The next morning, another installment of Paul’s serial appears in the paper, supposedly written before his death — duplicating the events that took place in his apartment when Lamont found him murdered. Hotchener, the fiction editor, and Mr. Davis, the managing editor, are suspects in the case. After narrowing down the possible suspects, The Shadow discovers that the linotype operator, Wilson, is the guilty party. Wilson was jealous of his millionaire brother Ross, while he worked at a tedious little job. He killed Ross and his wife, made it look like an accident, and changed the mystery story to parallel the real crime in an attempt to confuse the police. Trying to kill The Shadow in an effort to escape, Wilson threatens to break a vial of deadly gas — the same one he used to kill Paul Socretes, but the Shadow switched the vial contents with water, rendering the threat harmless.
