Synopsis:
The death of J.J. Ross, owner of “The Morning Star,” strangely parallels the murder mystery serial running in his own newspaper. Suspecting the wealthy old man’s death was more than an accident, Lamont visits the apartment of Grace Gale, the serial’s author, only to find her dead. The next morning another installment of Gale’s serial appears in the paper, supposedly written before her death and duplicating the events that took place in her apartment when Lamont found her murdered. Fiction editor Jim Manning, and Egan, the managing editor, are suspects in the case. After narrowing down the possible suspects, The Shadow discovers that the linotype operator, Wilson, is the guilty party. While working at his tedious little job, Wilson was jealous of his millionaire brother, Ross. He killed Ross and his wife, made it look like an accident and changed the mystery story to parallel the real crime in a move to confuse the police. Attempting to kill The Shadow in order to escape, Wilson threatens to break a vial of deadly gas — the same he used to kill Grace Gale—but the Shadow switched the contents of the vial with water, rendering it harmless.
