Attending a mentalist act performed by the mysterious Voltan, Lamont discovers that the mystic may indeed have extraordinary mental capabilities for he truly knows the secret of The Shadow. Confronting the mystic in private, The Shadow discovers Voltan is really a famous anarchist, who at one time or another was kicked out of every country in Europe due to his plans to control the world. With millions of followers in Europe and America, Voltan intends to start a vast uprising and overthrow the government. The Shadow wants no alliance, but Voltan offers him six hours to reconsider. Convincingly faking his own death so even Margot believes she lost her best friend, The Shadow pays a visit to the anarchist to makes him believe that the dead can come back to life. In fear of the spirit world, Voltan takes a deadly poison concealed in his ring in hopes of joining The Shadow and gaining the power he longs to have.
