Synopsis:

Lamont answers a plea from friend Dave Levett to investigate the Darkcliff Inn, rumored to be haunted since three men were found brutally murdered fifteen years ago — by hanging, stabbing and a gun. A strange old man with the strength of a maniac eludes Margot and Lamont who find Levett trapped within a coffin in the wine cellar. In the attic, Margot finds a hidden compartment containing a treasure chest once owned by a privateering sea captain. Levett pulls a gun and explains to Margot that, aware of Lamont’s investigating skills, he called the sleuths in to help find the treasure. Dunstead, the murderous proprietor, killed two tramps who came upon the inn and snooped too closely. During the struggle for the treasure, Dunstead falls out the window to his death. The Shadow laughs after Levett opens the chest and discovers the treasure is nothing more than eighteenth century Scrip dollars issued by the pirate government of the buccaneer, the city of Gunsport in Tabago — worthless in today’s world.
