Synopsis:
Fire and murder have been used in an effort to cover evidence of an international conspiracy. The mysterious Mr. Gregory arrives in New York from Tangiers, North Africa, to resolve the problem about the export books that a grand jury wants to review for a federal investigation. The books prove William Kent’s export company is supplying Communist countries with American-made products. Gregory hires a professional arsonist to set fire to Kent’s warehouse, trapping Kent inside with the books. Gregory’s problem seems to go up in smoke until Emile reveals to Gregory’s secretary Paula that he saved the books for a fifty thousand dollar ransom. Overhearing the plot, The Shadow steals the books, making Emile believe there’s been a double-cross, which leads to friction and further complicates matters. When the truth comes out, The Shadow laughs knowing that Emile has led him to the leader of the conspiracy and provided him with all the evidence necessary to sentence them to the electric chair.
