Synopsis:
John Clissen, renowned archaeologist, is responsible for the discovery of Montezuma’s tomb. The proud owner of the Chalice of Quetzecoatl, a wine cup with a raised pattern of a coiled snake around it, Clissen is found dead from a snakebite in his study. No evidence is left behind to suggest a snake was on the scene, baffling Commissioner Weston. Lamont questions the suspects (sometimes as The Shadow), including Clissen’s widow, Anne, her son Richard, their house servant Juan and a rival named Dr. Taylor. After the death of Richard in the same manner as his father, Lamont sets a trap, luring Dr. Taylor into the study to be his assistant. Taylor sought vengeance on Clissen for taking all the glory of the discoveries in which he felt he should have had equal part. A poisonous little snake was released from the secret hiding place in the chalice after a musical cue. Lamont kills the reptile after being bitten. Taylor is shocked to find his third victim alive and well thanks to an anti-venom serum.

This episode was a rewrite of “The Curse of Baldring Heights” broadcast on December 7th 1941.
