Synopsis:
A European musician named Charles Ritter takes refuge in a deserted loft to construct a shortwave radio broadcasting system, producing a wave that humans cannot hear, but which causes terror when his special composition, “Song of Fear,” is performed. His invention acts directly on the fear centers of the brain and late one evening he initiates a strange plague of fear upon the city. After sending Margot and Shreve to the hospital for acting strangely, Lamont learns the identity of the man responsible. Meanwhile, there’s panic in a theater, automobile accidents and suicides occur in the streets. Production stops in the Morton Airplane Factory where workmen flee in fear. Now cured, Lamont forces Margot to become a human detector to learn the whereabouts of Ritter and Hans. Upon discovering the criminals are hiding in a moldering old building in the city, Margot is kidnapped. Ritter attempts to force Margot into explaining what strange power The Shadow has that could overcome him and his assistant. Margot hesitates long enough for The Shadow to arrive and save her life. Ritter shouts madly how he plans to build a larger broadcasting set so all of America will be frantic with fear. The Shadow destroys the machine, and Ritter, desperate to stop the unseen force, falls against the terminals of his generator and receives a fatal shock.
