Since she recently came into possession of the blood red Ruby of Modoc, the newspapers claim she was a victim of the ruby’s long-established curse. Lamont and Margo venture to the island to investigate and quickly discover that Bernice is alive and well. Bernice’s vicious father-in-law is in love with her and. At Paradise Isle he plots with Reigh Singah, a mystic from the East, to hypnotize Barry to commit suicide so Jasper can have the girl all to himself. Fully aware that Singah’s powers of hypnotism may be equal to his own, The Shadow frees Bernice, thus ending the hold Singah has over the boy and preventing Barry’s suicide. Believing Singah is responsible for the betrayal, Jasper empties his gun into the mystic but Singah plunges over a cliff, taking Jasper with him.
