Synopsis:
Quentin Gulliver is found murdered and the only suspect, James Teeven, is convicted of the crime. Gulliver’s widow, Mary, verifies that Teeven was on the scene at the time of the shooting and had reason to commit the crime since Quentin bought up Teeven’s bank notes, financially wiping him out. Teeven and Quentin once loved the same woman — the origin of their quarrels. With only twenty-four hours before the scheduled execution, Lamont attempts to prove Teeven is innocent. He learns that Quentin was dying of an incurable disease, given six months to live and then tricked his wife into thinking Teeven was at the house, giving the appearance of a murder when he actually committed suicide. The Shadow forces Mary to reveal the location of her late husband’s diary and its contents that prove Teevan is innocent. It was a perfect crime that Gulliver assumed would never be discovered. The Shadow races the diary to Commissioner Weston’s residence and orders him to call the governor with only 18 minutes left before the scheduled execution.
