Synopsis:
The hospitals are filled with poisoned victims and the morgues are filled with dead bodies. A crazed mastermind is attempting to hold the city in fear, sending ransom notes for one million dollars, signed by The Shadow. When the mayor fails to pay, people are poisoned. Suspecting someone with a grudge when the Commissioner of Sanitation is poisoned, the real Shadow visits the Sanitation Department and discovers the city’s chief chemist, Gerber, is the guilty party. The Shadow becomes a victim of a vial of acid when he attempts to apprehend the chemist. When Gerber flees, Lamont and Margot pursue him in a race to the water tower in one of the city’s most fashionable suburbs. Chasing Gerber up the icy ladder leading to the top of the tower, his hands bleeding from the acid, The Shadow manages to smash the chemist’s bottle of crimson fluid. The police arrive with a searchlight, courtesy of Margot’s anonymous phone call. Commissioner Weston and a police sergeant overhear a confession from the maniac as he struggles on top of the tower with The Shadow. Gerber slips and falls to his death. The Shadow, tired and wounded, asks Commissioner Weston for the credit for solving this mystery in order to vindicate his name in the public eye.
