Helping Minerva Matthews locate her nephew, Lamont and Margot discover Michael Conzella met a horrible accident after practicing his act at the circus where he was employed. Now crippled and disfigured, Michael resides in the belfry room of an old church. His wife, Rose, murders Minerva by hanging her from a beam in a hotel room when the sleuths and the old aunt come too close to the truth. Rose denies the allegations that her husband is alive and well but while The Shadow questions the hotel staff Margot is kidnapped by Rose. In the belfry, Rose ties the bell rope around Margot’s ankles so that when she falls she will swing upside down. As the bell rings, she will be battered to death against the sides of the steeple. The Shadow arrives to save Margot, but the rope wasn’t secure; the off balance Rosa gets her foot caught in the same rope and meets the very death she had planned for Margot.
