Synopsis:
Solo Malloy, known as the Top Hat bandit because he always wore evening clothes when committing his deeds, is electrocuted for his crimes on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. Solo and his twin brother, Martin, looked alike except Solo had black eyes and Martin had blue. At midnight, the ghost of Solo makes an appearance and sets out to seek revenge on Fencey Paroux and Glass Vine—both men double-crossed him and were responsible for his conviction. By tracking down the two, Lamont and Margot are able to find the ghost in action. Vine is killed but Lamont convinces Fencey to act as bait in an attempt to catch the ghost. The Shadow arrives in time to unmask the real identity of the specter — Martin Malloy — wearing colored contact lenses in a scheme to collect money the two thugs owed his brother. Using silvered glass bullets, Martin was able to appear to be shot so even Commissioner Weston believed the ghost of Solo had come back from the dead. Lamont suspected the truth when the ghost made an error about the time of his execution — Solo was executed in a different time zone. Martin had worked out the entire scheme with Solo on a visit to the death house.
