Synopsis:
One year after Tony Scarese died of heart failure as he faced the electric chair, the five people responsible for his sentencing receive death threats in the form of a letter signed “The Master.” The judge, the patrolman and the district attorney are found dead from apparent natural causes, but Lamont and Margot, the fourth and fifth on the list, suspect otherwise. The Shadow questions the county coroner and learns the truth: Tony Scarese is still alive. When the coroner used to work at the death house he was blackmailed by Scarese to give him a drug that resulted in temporary rigor mortis. After he was pronounced dead and recovered from the drug, Scarese went to South America for a year to hide out. He has now returned in the disguise of a cripple, using a bushmaster snake as his weapon of choice, hidden inside his walking cane. Racing to Margot Lane’s apartment, The Shadow knocks the cane out of Scarese’s hand, releasing the snake. While Margot hides in the closet, The Shadow uses a chair to kill the snake, but not before the reptile added Scarese to its list of victims.
Note:
This script will be performed again as “Death is the Master” broadcast on May 11th 1952.
