Synopsis:
When a former arsonist named Matches Malone is accused of starting a half million dollar warehouse fire along the waterfront, Lamont attempts to prove his innocence. After all, as a member of the parole board, Lamont was responsible for getting Malone his new job. During the fire, Lamont and Margot are among those who see a giant white lizard walking in the flames. Henry Blain, the insurance investigator, receives a letter from the firebug who calls himself “The Salamander, Master of Flame and Prince of Fires.” Reaching the Chase Loft Building which is listed among The Salamander’s targets, Margot follows the giant lizard. Meanwhile, Lamont and Weston participate in a high-speed chase through the city streets, following a trail left by Margot. The trail leads to a secret lab where The Salamander, having kidnapped Margot when she got too close, reveals a tank of little white lizards which he uses to set fires. The Shadow laughs and The Salamander blindly shoots about the room emptying his gun at the voice. He accidentally shoots the glass tanks containing the explosive lizards. The lab catches on fire, and Lamont carries Margot and the unconscious Salamander into the streets. Commissioner Weston finds them removing the asbestos hood shaped like a lizard to discover Henry Blain, the insurance man. Blain suffers from a split personality and, when insane, had coated his little lizards with pure sodium metal. Sodium burns violently on contact with air, water or wood, so he kept them in a tank of kerosene until he was ready to use them to start fires.
