Synopsis:

Broadway producer Norman Bryce is found dead from an apparent suicide, oddly with a frozen smile on his face. The painting of a lady in black, a long dead actress, is the only lead Lamont has to work with. After a few more murders, Lamont reveals the method by which the murders were committed. Behind the painting is a gas tank filled with a poisonous gas called Lewisite, which leaves a horrible smile on the faces of its victims. Once a potential victim is unconscious, the gardener on the grounds shoots the victim, making it look like suicide. Jealous of Diane Morrow, the woman he painted, Albert Gerner changed his identity and posed as a gardener so he could look after what is left of his true love, and later murder the men who sought her affections even after death.
