Synopsis:

In a small New England town, local talk spreads of the ghost of Sir Roger Mathus, the first governor of the colony in 1712, who has been responsible for a number of recent deaths. Lamont and Margot are called to town by the local sheriff in hopes they can shed some light on the murders. Each victim had been found with a death warrant in their hands, signed by Mathus. After facing off against the ghost, Lamont and Margot quickly discover a human factor involved. The prime suspect is Silas Crossman who not only speaks the ancient tongue and writes calligraphy but is against the town’s decision to open the public hall that Mathus constructed as a museum. After The Shadow questions Silas, he discovers his nephew Edward had hoped to play the ghost, with the intention that his uncle would be accused of the crime so he could inherit the family fortune. Before Edward can apply a hot branding iron to Margot’s flesh, The Shadow arrives to rescue her. Edward sets the place ablaze, ultimately killing the “ghost” of Sir Roger Mathus forever.
