Synopsis:

Banker Neil Redmond commits suicide because the voice in his head plagues him to do so. Lamont, following a clue made with the dead man’s dying breath, follows the trail to Ahmed the Mystic, a spiritualist who hides behind a cloak of secrecy. When usual police methods fail to uncover anything, The Shadow questions Ahmed and again fails to find a connection to the murder. Redmond’s widow plotted with Ahmed to arrange the death so she can inherit her late husband’s money. But when she fails to pay what was promised, Ahmed uses his crystal globe to order her to commit suicide in the same manner as her husband. Following her death, Margot visits Ahmed and is hypnotized into murdering Lamont. Three failed attempts result in Margot being committed to an asylum for claiming to hear voices. The Shadow pays Ahmed a return visit to discover a little electric machine concealed under the crystal globe. The machine emits a deadly light called “Theta Light,” which paralyzes the onlooker’s brain through the nerve centers of the eye. From that point on, the brain will hold only the last normal conscious impression of the onlooker — the last words Ahmed speaks. The Shadow learns how to reverse the process and, using the globe, orders Ahmed to confess his crime to the police. One week later Margot has recovered and Commissioner Weston is baffled when Ahmed reports to the station to confess his crimes.
