Synopsis:

Detective Houseman places Paul Williams under arrest on suspicion of murder when a gambler named Jerry Rowen is clubbed to death in Chicago. The recently paroled Williams crossed state lines to commit the crime and his fingerprints were found all over Rowen’s room. Commissioner Weston assumes the case is closed when Williams is found hanged in his cell, an apparent suicide. After investigating the details of the case, Lamont discovers that Williams was murdered. Lamont attempts to find Mrs. Williams in New York to learn just who created the fictional police circulars to cinch Williams’ guilt but the widow is shot to death before she can tell anything. The guilty party is Detective Houseman, who sent Williams to Chicago on a wild goose chase to find his wife, so the ex-con would break his parole. Houseman faked the police circulars to make Commissioner Weston’s job easier. Houseman killed Rowen because he owed the gambler money and could not pay. Before Houseman can silence Margot and the remaining suspect, The Shadow arrives to save the day.
