Synopsis:

The body of wealthy Mathilda Redfield is fished out of the river early one morning and Lamont investigates after learning that the late woman’s niece, Muriel, suspects foul play. The prime suspect is Private Dan Burke, who had threatened the old lady if she chose to continue attempting to break up his secret marriage to Muriel. After Dan escapes police custody and Muriel mysteriously vanishes, Lamont digs into the facts of the case and learns the identity of the guilty culprits. Mrs. Haverson, a resident at the hotel, cheated at cards to put Mathilda in debt, requiring her to sell an expensive bracelet. When Mathilda discovered that Haverson was cheating, Mathilda was bumped off and the bracelet was stolen. Attempting to dispose of Muriel the same way because the young girl has figured out the truth, Haverson and her accomplice, Mr. Reed of the hotel switchboard, find their efforts thwarted when The Shadow steals her gun and puts it in the hands of Muriel, who forces the criminals into the custody of Commissioner Weston and his men.
