Synopsis:
A smuggler named Mr. King arrives in New England to sell a load of diamonds sewn inside a fish. Having helped a Singhalese strangler escape from the penal colony in Guiana, he lets his “pet” roam across the countryside committing insane acts of strangulation with a garrote to draw police attention away from King’s smuggling operation. When Lamont and Margot, out-of-state tourists, buy a pompano from a local market unaware of the contraband inside the fish, Margot encounters Moru, the strangler, and the skipper of the vessel that carried King to the states. On board the ship, Margot discovers that King plans to drop her in the middle of the ocean after he lets Moru strangle the life out of her — but not before he learns the whereabouts of the pompano. The Shadow happens to be on board, signals for the Coast Guard on the wireless, and spooks the crew of the ship into believing a ghost is in their midst. Losing control of the situation, King stands behind a machine gun and orders the men to report below deck. Captain Stevenson surprises King from behind, explaining how he survived a recent betrayal after learning that the passengers on his ship were smugglers and killers. Ordering the crew to the lifeboats for the arriving Coast Guard, Stevenson asks The Shadow to ensure the safety of Margot and the men, leaving King and Moru on board. Having already turned the pompano over to the police, Stevenson sets fire to the powder magazine and the boat explodes.
