Synopsis:
A legend attached to an ancient abbey concerned an abbot who centuries ago disgraced his church and was forever doomed to haunt the place. During reconstruction of a local church, the construction workers abscond, supposedly frightened by a cloaked figure. The apparition is blamed for the death of one church committee member, and three others have mysteriously disappeared. Lamont and Margot spend the evening in the church to catch sight of the Black Abbot only to discover that he is a flesh and blood man in disguise. After examining blueprints for the reconstruction, Margot discovers a hidden passageway and is promptly kidnapped by Paul Randolph, the architect. Safely hidden between the vaulted ceiling and the outer roof of the church, Margot learns that Randolph wasn’t building a church. Instead, he was building a temple to a greater power. Attempting to add Margot to his congregation where three dead men sit positioned as devoted parishioners, Randolph meets The Shadow who knocks the knife out of his hands. Attempting to flee by sliding down the bell rope, Randolph makes a jump for it, gets his neck tangled in the rope and is hung—much like his first victim.
