Synopsis:
A German spy is found riddled with bullets along a New England village off Cape Mercy. He kept shouting “Nachgeist,” which means “night spirit.” The U.S. Intelligence Service examines the corpse and finds a small electrical device with a curious crystalline substance. Lamont is called in to investigate and, upon learning that General Werner von Brunau is involved, masquerades as the general in order to infiltrate a desolate house. The disguise works as Lamont gains entry. Then, as The Shadow, he overhears a discussion and discovers the Nazi plan: Herr Krieger has found a method of reviving the dead using a complicated machine and Nachgeist crystals — found only along the New England coastline. Captain Loeschner inspects the system and approves of the program, ordering Krieger to return to Berlin so it can be perfected and manufactured in large quantity. When Krieger discovers he is to be brought back as a prisoner, The Shadow tricks Krieger into thinking the unseen voice is a trick of the Gestapo to learn the secret of the machine. Angry for the betrayal, Krieger smashes the machine, exposing its wiring and electrocuting himself.
