A beautiful young actress drops dead at a private society party which Lamont and Margot attend. On the trail of a brutal killer, they stumbled upon a bloody-faced body in the closet of a hotel basement storage room. The solution to the mystery leads to Harriet Hamilton, the middle-aged wealthy patroness of the arts, who funded the party. The mind and force behind the murders, Harriet used the young concert pianist, Edward Milland, as a tool to kill the actress, and later an actor who feared he might be accused of the crime. During a confrontation, Milland kills Harriet, and Lamont attempts to apprehend Milland at the risk of his own life. Milland realizes he had murdered the one person who had made him strong.
