Synopsis:

When a butler named Gerald Tracy is charged with murder, and realizing Tracy’s employer committed suicide, lawyer Alex McKenzie successfully pulls a daring stunt in the courtroom so his client can walk out a free man. Two years later, McKenzie is pulled out of the icy waters along the riverfront — dying from both hypothermia and infected bullet wounds. In the presence of Commissioner Weston, Lamont and Margot, McKenzie reveals how he cleverly planned to profit from a murder that would frame his former client, Tracy, now a butler for a new employer. Scheming with the housekeeper, Hilda, McKenzie explains how he had arranged a suicide knowing the butler would take the blame and a jury would not be so sympathetic a second time. Realizing McKenzie could testify against her, Hilda shot the lawyer dead, and his body fell from a balcony into the river. The Shadow apprehends Hilda while the butler goes insane, believing he committed the second murder.
