Synopsis:

While visiting Margot’s Aunt Emma on Baldtop Mountain in Vermont, Lamont and Margot discover the locals are spooked by the constant thunder and lightning atop the mountain, but little if no rain falls. Hens, roosters and turkeys are found without feathers and the cows give spoiled milk. People have vanished and the dog that always stays with farmhand Ned Travers is found with its throat slashed. A native superstition about dwarfs on the mountain is laughed at until Lamont and Margot find little men wandering the countryside. Investigating inside a cave, Lamont finds an oversize phonograph with huge amplifiers. A giant arc lamp simulates the lightning from a distance. It seems local resident Josh Takes hired a number of out-of-work German sideshow performers to help mine a rich lode of silver in the cavern. The effects were used to scare everyone away since Takes was mining on government land. After the dwarfs throw Lamont into a pit, Josh turns his attention toward Margot — but The Shadow reveals Josh’s intention of betraying the dwarfs, who kill him.
