Synopsis:
Master puppeteer Rikko and his deformed brother Goreau, give the greatest performance in New York with their life-size puppets. One woman in the audience claims the puppet in the “Danse Macabre” sequence is her sister Diane, who disappeared three days ago. Lamont attempts to inspect the dolls but faces opposition from Goreau. The next day, the body of Diane is fished out of the river, and Lamont points out to Commissioner Weston how the hands and wrists of the corpse appear to have been attached to wires. Later, as The Shadow, Lamont sneaks into the theater to get a closer look at the life-life dolls. There he learns the horrible truth: Goreau is the true puppeteer working his magic behind the curtains, leaving his brother Rikko to accept the reputation. Having killed his brother, Goreau intends to make Rikko one of the performers. Death makes his new dolls life-like, but as the corpses begin to deteriorate, Goreau is always forced to dump them in the river and find new victims for each day’s performance. He intends to use Margot as his next performer but The Shadow intervenes. Fleeing the scene when Commissioner Weston and his men knock on the door, Goreau is killed when the police open fire.
