Synopsis:

During construction of a new bridge, a number of accidents take the lives of workers who claim to have heard voices warning them of impending doom before they slip and fall to their deaths. Lamont goes undercover as a construction worker to learn the source of the “spirit voices” and gathers information about the man responsible for the entire construction, George Austin. The suspects include Calwern, the supervisor, and Bascomb, the creditor. High above the ground, Lamont hears the mysterious voices and slips, seemingly falling to his death. While Margot mourns for Lamont, the men at the construction site quit. Out of desperation to keep the workers from leaving, Austin personally ventures to the top to convince the men that it is safe. Alone with Calwern, Austin discovers there is nothing supernatural. The man was a former vaudevillian and made use of his ventriloquist act. Exacting revenge for his daughter’s death, for which he blames Austin, the supervisor is determined to murder his boss. The Shadow appears and prevents another murder but Calwern loses his footing and plunges to his death. Back in Margot’s apartment, Lamont explains how he figured out the solution and, when pushed by Calwern, pulled his Shadow act and screamed to convince the crooked supervisor that he had fallen to his death.
