Synopsis:
Old Flagstead manor hasn’t been occupied for twenty-five years. Once a beautiful place, it now lies crumbling with age. When a sudden thunderstorm forces Lamont and Margot to take shelter in the manor, they discover the house servant, Peter, still performing his duties faithfully. His mind having snapped, Peter believes the Flagsteads are still alive and tends to their every need. Exploring the ruins, Lamont and Margot find a girl’s body, stabbed and chained to the wall in a small cellar room. The corpse is identified as Janice Elliott, stepdaughter to the wealthy Mr. Kingsley. She vanished four months ago. Weston books Kingsley on suspicion of murder — part of an attempt to cash in on a half million dollar life insurance policy — knowing the family recently went broke. However, Lamont and Margot discover that Kingsley is innocent when the real Janice turns up alive and well. She found a homeless stranger in town who resembled her closely enough to allow her stepfather to cash in on the insurance. Having discovered Peter in the manor, she took advantage of his condition and made her a pawn in the scheme. The Shadow, however, laughs when he learns the truth and promises Janice that the discovery will go public.
