Synopsis:

John Mattley, son of the wealthy Gustave Mattley, has accrued a large debt at Max Merko’s crooked gambling house and finds himself forced to sign an I.O.U., payable upon inheriting his father’s estate. Hours later, Gustave Mattley is found dead — and John is the lead suspect. When a former fling of John’s named Gloria is found dead under the same mysterious circumstances, The Shadow suspects Merko is behind the murders — for both profit and the elimination of business partners. Attempting to inspect the corpse of Gloria, Lamont and Margot give chase to a crook who deposits a headless body off the side of the road. Thinking the couple suspects his involvement, Mattley reveals an experimental device that emits a death ray — one which can turn a human brain into ashes. Before Mattley can use the ray gun on Margot, The Shadow interferes, smashing the controls, shutting down the gun permanently. Mattley is arrested for the murders.
