Synopsis:

Bill MacPhail, a producer of popular stage plays, rents out the old John Carter Theatre which has been abandoned for twenty years. Carter’s deathbed request was that the building which bears his name never again be used as a theatre. When the ghost of John Carter strangles the night watchman to death, Lamont agrees to investigate for his old college friend MacPhail. During the first dress rehearsal, an actress is killed; before the police arrive, the lights go out and her body vanishes. Margot meets the ghost and is kidnapped. Another actor dies, and Lamont discovers the method for the second and third murders — the organ is rigged with high voltage electricity. Traveling down into the cellar below the stage, Lamont is knocked unconscious from behind, and MacPhail turns on the gas. It seems the third actor, Humphreys, applied makeup to impersonate John Carter. The two men hoped that the murders would prevent anyone from ever touching the John Carter Theatre so they could buy the property for peanuts and sell it at a much higher price to a bus company for use as a terminal. Before Margot is forced to the organ to become the final victim, The Shadow arrives to save her life. The police arrive to take the guilty away. Lamont later explains he woke in time to stop the gas jet and find his way out of the cellar.
