Synopsis:

Helen Legrande pleads with Lamont Cranston to visit her ancestral home in the bayou country of Louisiana to learn exactly what caused the deaths of brothers-in-law Jonathan and Bob. Both men were mysteriously drawn to the Cauldron — an old lye pit in the woods in back of the estate. Full of mud and quicklime, it swallows anyone and anything that ventures too close to the Cauldron. According to Keith the caretaker, the entire family is cursed with a violent death for every generation. Before Lamont can discover the cause, George Legrande is mysteriously attracted to the Cauldron and dies a horrible death. As The Shadow, Lamont discovers that Keith and housekeeper Melinda have conspired to eliminate every member of the Legrande family so they can inherit the estate. Keith is their uncle disguised by a false identity. Recognizing Keith and his daughter, The Shadow recalls how years ago they toured the country in a carnival with a hypnotism act. Under a post-hypnotic suggestion, Keith orders Margot to murder Helen, but Lamont interferes. The Shadow also discovers how Keith persuaded his daughter to believe she is the notorious Florette Legrande from two hundred years ago. She lured the Legrande brothers to the Cauldron. During a confrontation, she pushes her father and he falls back in to the Cauldron, pulling her in with him. Melinda sets fire to the estate and Lamont rushes in to rescue Helen and her small son, Tommy. Melinda perishes in the fire, ending the curse.
