Synopsis:
Six paupers masquerading as wealthy people with everything to live for have committed suicide. Lamont suspects a connection. When Professor Duncan, a former professor of Lamont’s, pays him a visit, he offers a possible solution to the crimes. Months ago, he stole a small idol from a sacred temple, and native legend claims death comes to anyone who touched it. Those who once possessed the idol included the six dead men. When Duncan is found dead along with Lamont’s chauffeur, Lamont goes to the art gallery to question the man responsible for the idol exhibit. After Margot is kidnapped and subjected to a water torture, Lamont sets out to find Mrs. Duncan. After tying and gagging her as the murderess and freeing Margot, The Shadow meets Rudat-Singh, who turns out to be Duncan in disguise — he faked his own death. It was his intent to force the wealthy to pay him before he killed them and make it look like suicide, so he could build a temple in India dedicated to Djaruti, the Goddess of Death. Fooling Duncan into believing his voice and mysterious movements are those of the goddess herself, The Shadow tricks the professor into falling to his death in a pit of quicksand. Upon losing his balance, Duncan takes his crooked wife with him.
