Synopsis:
Margot and Lamont attempt to run down the mysterious menace that threatens John Ten Eyck, of Thunderhead Manse, a massive old house encircling by a mountain range. John is being haunted by a ghost that appears as a transparent vapor. Three attempts on his life force Lamont and Margot to investigate, but during their midnight vigil the silent, bitter housekeeper, Miss Harriet, is stabbed in the back. Commissioner Weston takes John’s Polynesian servant, Ruka, into custody since he admitted owning the knife. Meanwhile, Lamont attempts to catch the ghost but both he and Margot are temporarily blinded when the apparition vanishes in a flash of flame. When Margot lets on that she suspects she knows who the killer is, Lamont realizes she has set herself up as bait for the killer. Late that evening, Margot receives a visit from John and his miniature flamethrower — the cause of the ghostly apparition. The Shadow knocks the cylinder out of the murderer’s hands and orders Margot to fetch Weston. John Ten Eyck murdered his aunt to gain control of the estate but his housekeeper saw the deed and was blackmailing him. She demanded more every week so he silenced her for good — but first he had to divert suspicion by staging attempts on his life and calling in Lamont to alibi for him. His plan would have gone accordingly had it not been for the intrusion of The Shadow.
