Cast: Bill Johnstone (Lamont Cranston/The Shadow) Marjorie Anderson (Margot Lane) Paul Huber
Synopsis:
A series of crimes, ranging from purse snatching to payroll robbery and murder, has swept across the city. George Fairfield, the famous Hollywood makeup artist, vanishes without a trace. Lamont doesn’t suspect a connection until a recent robbery at a fur warehouse results in the murder of a gang member found frozen to death inside a large ice box, along with a note signed by “The Beggars of Death” ordering Lamont to back off — or else. Suspecting the work of a well-organized gang, The Shadow questions a few street beggars to discover a gang of thieves have been made up to look like street beggars in what is believed to be the best camouflage in the world for crooks. Preying on the sympathetic public, the beggars commit daring robberies and then report to a mastermind. Despite his artistry, Fairfield was silenced when he attempted to walk away from the crime. When Margot is kidnapped and taken to the secret hideout at the graveyard just outside city limits, The Shadow meets face to face with the mastermind — Jacques Clavard, the owner of the fur warehouse who collected insurance on the stolen goods. Determined not to be apprehended by the police, Clavard reveals a trick to the invisible avenger: his underground hideout is next to the river. Pulling a lever he allows water to rush in and flood the hideout to kill them all. The Shadow quickly sweeps Margot up and carries her out, just as water laps at his heels.
