Synopsis:
Two of David Fairfield’s agents have been murdered. When there’s a murder in a town near the biggest fission lab in the East, he sends Lamont and Margot to Brookfield posing as celebrated authors so they can investigate. The only clue is a series of red circles on various notes on music sheets, spelling out the names of the two victims and potential new ones. Lamont and Margot’s covers are blown when the real authors arrive so they hide out for a time, afraid of being accused of the crimes. When Margot visits the church to play the organ using the circled notes, Mayor Bell arrives with a sharp knife. The Shadow comes to the rescue. Alone with Fairfield, Lamont explains that the red circles were to throw off the detectives and confuse the trail. Mayor Bell had embezzled from accounts of the village of Brookfield. He decided to raise quick money to cover the crime by destroying the stained glass windows in the Community House and collect the insurance. His victims were murdered when they discovered the ruse.
