Synopsis:
In Cherry Grove, the city’s smart summer suburb, stands the mansion of wealthy bachelor Cyrus Granger who makes preparations for a children’s summer party — complete with costumed actors. When Granger is found dead and both actor Leopold Desert and the mantelpiece above the fireplace are missing Granger’s guests, Lamont and Margot, set out to find the motive for the murder. After tracking down the whereabouts of Desert, they find his body at an actor’s home. Following a clue in the dirt among the tire tracks, they trace the murderer, Mr. Holland, and find him in possession of the stolen mantelpiece. Holland employed Desert to do the dirty work and then murdered his accomplice to cover his tracks. When Holland threatens to kill Margot, The Shadow starts a fire, forcing Holland to panic and giving Lamont the chance to save her and bring the murderer to justice. Holland wanted the mantelpiece, assuming it contained a valuable Shakespeare manuscript in Shakespeare’s own hand, but there was no valuable treasure and his efforts were for nothing.
