Synopsis:

A mysterious swamp creature has struck terror in the hearts of a Southwestern community. When two men are found murdered, the local Indians vacate the land, and Gazette journalist Harry Conway spreads the native superstition in his weekly columns. The widow of one of the victims calls on Lamont to come help solve the mystery. After finding the howling dog that supposedly walks with the swamp creature, Lamont suspects foul play, claiming ghost stories and facts don’t mix. Tour guide Tom Copper, the lead suspect and the man who guided the victims to their doom, is found dead. The Shadow questions Eugene Hart, owner of a petroleum factory on the other side of the swamp. Piecing together the clues, he finds that Hart operates an underground pipeline used to illegally drain oil from the swamp. The cheapest way to get the oil land is to frighten people away, so Conway cooked up the legend of the swamp and committed three murders to cover his tracks. When Margot finds herself cornered with the truth and Conway, The Shadow comes to the rescue to save Margot and punish the guilty.
