Synopsis:

Star baseball player Johnny Taylor has been missing for two days and his team is taking a brutal beating on the field. Lamont and Margot almost run over him in the streets and Vera Hagen, claiming to be his sister, attempts to assist. Rocky Madison takes over, helping Johnny back into the basement of a dilapidated brownstone house. When Margot and Lamont force their way in, they find Johnny, dazed and shocked, and the bullet-riddled body of Rocky. After the police use forensics to verify Rocky is innocent, Lamont and Margot board a train bound for Mason City, hoping the murderer will reveal his hand. Vera is murdered and her body pushed off the train. In Mason City, Lamont discovers that Johnny’s shirt was coated with a phosphorus substance so when the lights go out an assassin can find his target. Lamont switches uniforms and after the attempt is made, George Lynch, manager of Johnny’s team, visits the ball player in his hotel room, where the plot is exposed. Lynch angrily pulls a gun, confessing that he is working for Ace Kramer, who bet a lot of money against the team. The Shadow arrives to save Johnny. With three strikes against him, Lynch is already out.
