Synopsis:

Joe Adams borrows money from a loan shark to pay his wife’s medical bills. Ruth came down with polio and Joe soon lost his job. A shrewd operator named Al Tate uses his man Knuckles to apply muscles to the wheelchair-bound Ruth and a blackjack to Joe because the couple cannot pay up. Having paid the loan off plus interest and fees, the Adamses are forced to continue to pay — or else. While Margot helps with the payment, Lamont Cranston sets out undercover as Lamont Smith, a nightclub singer out of a job and in need of money, hoping the credit manager of the loan sharks will come around and size him up so he can learn Tate’s identity. When Tate and Knuckles make an appearance, they find Lamont gone and face The Shadow. The voice of  conscience suggests to Tate that Knuckles has been holding out on him, and Tate, unsure of his bruiser, searches Knuckles’ coat pockets. Having planted fifty dollars in Knuckles’ pocket, The Shadow observes the men quarrel. Tate shoots Knuckles and the strong-arm pushes Tate out the window to his death. Knuckles knows the bullet will take care of him and The Shadow assures him if the bullet does not, the electric chair will. Back at the Adamses’, Ruth has a surprise for Joe. She has started taking a couple steps out of the chair and soon there will be more.
