Synopsis:
Margot purchases a chessboard for Lamont and, soon after, is distracted long enough to have one of the chess pieces stolen from beneath their noses. Curious to know why a little pawn is significant enough to steal, the two begin an investigation that leads to the murder of an elderly shopkeeper named Decker. The trail comes to a close at the Mid-City Amusement Park. There, two more murders are committed. The assistance of Arthur Wayne, investigator for the Butler Indemnity Company, leads to the solution. A number of crooks at the park were involved in duping rich women into revealing the whereabouts of their insured gems. Wayne arranged for several undercover payoffs to recover stolen valuables and their most recent take, a valuable gem, was hidden in the chess piece that was accidentally sold to Margot. When Wayne is approached with the truth, he attempts to make Margot his fourth victim until The Shadow comes to the rescue.
