Synopsis:
A gambler named Ace Marcus orders Renault not to enter his sure thing in the race so he can cash in on a large bet — or else. Renault defies the gambler and his stable and horse go up in flames. The next day the race is run as scheduled with Renault entering a substitute horse which still wins. When the jockey is found dead soon after, all eyes turn to Marcus, who sought vengeance, unaware his gun moll was involved with Renault. Renault actually switched horses. The one that died in the fire was an old nag, not the fast horse. Marcus breaks into Renault’s house in an attempt to get Renault, but is surprised by the racehorse owner and shot dead. The Shadow laughs, knowing the self-defense story will not work. The Shadow explains the police have been informed of the scheme — the jockey discovered the switch and attempted to blackmail Renault, and it was Renault who attempted to destroy the proof by burning down a second stable with the horse inside. The Shadow managed to remove the timing device and take the horse to a safe location. In an attempt to betray Renault and run off with the money, Dolores is disarmed by The Shadow, making it easier for the arriving police.
