Synopsis:

Three spinster sisters from the Satterly family’s historic white-columned estate in Browcrest fought over the attentions of Tad Bacon, a lawyer in town who was attempting to court young Constance. In a confrontation, Hepzibah shot Jassy, Constance’s hound, and accidentally killed her sister; Lally, the youngest of the three, helped cover up the crime. Now, five years later, Lamont and Margot find themselves stranded at the estate when their car breaks down. Drunk from alcohol and guilt, Hepzibah claims she saw the ghost of her late sister — and the hound that protected her. Desperate for a way out, Hepzibah commits suicide. Later that evening, Tad Bacon is attacked and killed by the same ghost hound, while trying to dig up a grave to prove Constance was murdered. Lamont decides to go into town to search for clues, leaving Margot to keep an eye on Lally, unaware that the youngest sister has a secret hidden in the attic. Constance never died. She suffered amnesia from her wounds and Lally purchased a duplicate hound and trained it to obey Constance’s commands. Lally wanted the Satterly fortune, so she plotted to be the cock-of-the-walk — complete mistress of Browcrest and the family money. Having witnessed the death of her love, Constance regains her memory and angrily sends the dog after the youngest sister before Lally can silence the women, saving Margot’s life. Arriving on the scene, The Shadow is unable to reach the gun in time to shoot the dog before it kills Lally.
